What to do when someone dies

This page is intended to assist those who have to arrange a funeral and for those who would like to know the procedure. Sadly should you ever need our services, rest assured that you are dealing with an Independent family business who offer an efficient courteous service.

What to do when a death occurs

If the death occurs at home contact your Doctor who will confirm, and if he or she is able, issue a death certificate. At this stage the Doctor will normally give you authority to call the Funeral Director who will arrange for the removal of the deceased to their Chapel of Rest. This can be done at any time of the day or night by telephone.

Should the death occur in a hospital or nursing home, the above procedure is likely to have been carried out, with your permission, by the staff on duty. They will advise when and where the death certificate may be collected.

Registration

The Death Certificate must be taken to the office of the district registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages for official registration. The Funeral Director will advise you of the whereabouts of the office. Often it is necessary to make an appointment with the registrar, the Funeral Director will assist you with this should you wish.
The person who is to register (The Informant) should take the death certificate and if possible the Medical card of the deceased with them, and be prepared to give the following information to the Registrar.

1. The date and place of the Birth and Death.
2. The full name of the deceased.
3. The home address of the deceased.
4. The marital status of the deceased.
5. The occupation (if any) of the deceased.
6. If the deceased is female, her maiden name and her husband’s full name and occupation.

The registrar will issue a Green certificate for Burial or Cremation which should be handed to the Funeral Director as soon as possible.
Copies of the Entry of Death (Death Certificates) may be obtained from the Registrar on payment of the appropriate fee.

H. M. Coroner

In certain cases a death is reported to H. M. Coroner, there are a number of reasons for this and under such circumstances special procedures may be necessary. This should not be viewed with anxiety or alarm. The Coroners Office will advise you on the next step to be taken and when Registration can take place. Your Funeral Director will also be able to assist.

The Funeral Director

If you have not already contacted a Funeral Director, once you have the Green Certificate, you may then do so. They are available during office hours or by telephone at any hour of the day or night.
