What to do when a death occursIf the death occurs at home contact your Doctor who will confirm, and if he or she is able, issue a death certificate. At this stage the Doctor will normally give you authority to call the Funeral Director who will arrange for the removal of the deceased to their Chapel of Rest. This can be done at any time of the day or night by telephone. Should the death occur in a hospital or nursing home, the above procedure is likely to have been carried out, with your permission, by the staff on duty. They will advise when and where the death certificate may be collected. RegistrationThe Death Certificate must be taken to the office of the
district registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages for official
registration. The Funeral Director will advise you of the whereabouts of
the office. Often it is necessary to make an appointment with the
registrar, the Funeral Director will assist you with this should you
wish. 1. The date and place of the Birth and Death. The registrar will issue a Green certificate for Burial
or Cremation which should be handed to the Funeral Director as soon as
possible. H. M. CoronerIn certain cases a death is reported to H. M. Coroner, there are a number of reasons for this and under such circumstances special procedures may be necessary. This should not be viewed with anxiety or alarm. The Coroners Office will advise you on the next step to be taken and when Registration can take place. Your Funeral Director will also be able to assist. The Funeral DirectorIf you have not already contacted a Funeral Director, once you have the Green Certificate, you may then do so. They are available during office hours or by telephone at any hour of the day or night.
